Carpet bowls? You may ask, is it a serious sport or a pleasant opportunity to meet friends and socialise? Well, it is played competitively at county and national level, so it is certainly a sport, but, as our emphasis is on lively company and a convivial atmosphere, we answer that it must be both. It is played on a carpet 30 feet by six feet with miniature “woods” which are biased just like outdoor woods; there is a wooden ”spar” in the centre of the carpet, which the woods must avoid. It is a simple game, very easy to learn, but with practice and experience it can become very skilful, competitive and rewarding.

We were founded in 1993 with the loan of a carpet from the local authority; many of the current membership were founders and at first our numbers increased impressively, but recently they have declined. We only meet in the winter, for many of our members play Green Bowls in the summer. You will find us in the Village Hall every Friday evening, either for our club night or involved in a friendly match with a team from another village and on some Tuesdays for matches. New members are welcomed with open arms – the more the merrier.   The match fee for the evening is £1.00 and the year’s subscription is £5,00. Not the most expensive of sporting or social activities.

We are a very busy club, as a glance at this season’s fixture list will demonstrate. We compete in the second division of the South Cambridgeshire League which can take us as far afield as Wrestlingworth, near Biggleswade, a journey which takes us through four counties (no prizes for naming them!) and we play friendly, but hotly contested, matches against teams from neighbouring villages – a very full programme. We also find time for a popular Club Pairs Championship.  Like Green Bowls, Carpet Bowls is a sociable game – a chance to meet new people and make new friends. Each match ends with a convivial supper – we are well known for our hospitality. So if television is losing its appeal and pubs have nothing new to offer, we would be delighted to welcome you.
