Carpet bowls? You may ask, is it a serious sport or a pleasant opportunity to meet friends and socialise? Well, it is played competitively at county and national level, so it is certainly a sport, but, as our emphasis is on lively company and a convivial atmosphere, we answer that it must be both. It is played on a carpet 30 feet by six feet with miniature “woods” which are biased just like outdoor woods; there is a wooden ”spar” in the centre of the carpet, which the woods must avoid. It is a simple game, very easy to learn, but with practice and experience it can become very skilful, competitive and rewarding.

We were founded in 1993 with the loan of a carpet from the local authority; many of the current membership were founders and at first our numbers increased impressively, but recently they have declined. We only meet in the winter, for many of our members play Green Bowls in the summer. You will find us in the Village Hall every Friday evening, either for our club night or involved in a friendly match with a team from another village and on some Tuesdays for matches. New members are welcomed with open arms – the more the merrier.   The match fee for the evening is £1.00 and the year’s subscription is £5,00. Not the most expensive of sporting or social activities.

We are a very busy club, as a glance at this season’s fixture list will demonstrate. We compete in the second division of the South Cambridgeshire League which can take us as far afield as Wrestlingworth, near Biggleswade, a journey which takes us through four counties (no prizes for naming them!) and we play friendly, but hotly contested, matches against teams from neighbouring villages – a very full programme. We also find time for a popular Club Pairs Championship.  Like Green Bowls, Carpet Bowls is a sociable game – a chance to meet new people and make new friends. Each match ends with a convivial supper – we are well known for our hospitality. So if television is losing its appeal and pubs have nothing new to offer, we would be delighted to welcome you.

Walking out of Littlebury PDF

To walk into Saffron Walden using the footpath on the main road leave Littlebury by the bridge and turn right at the top of the Walden Road to go south via Windmill Hill (the B184). Alternatively strike south at Holy Trinity Church (B1383) and at the end of the twin hedges continue with the Audley End park walls and house on your left – turn left at the Adam Bridge and continue around the park until you reach the town.

To avoid traffic as much as possible, it is very pleasant instead to turn left at the end of the hedges and walk down Home Farm Lane. Cross the river and just ahead to your right is a discreet and leafy pathway with a stream running alongside leading to open parkland. Follow the path keeping Audley End House on the right to emerge through large gates, practically in the centre of Saffron Walden.

  Home Farm Lane  Howe Wood

Home Farm Lane                                                                    Howe Wood from Batts Lane

Any walk out of Littlebury village will mean using the road. A brisk walk past Howe Wood by way of Merton Place will take you towards Strethall, England’s smallest parish, with its tiny and well cared for ‘Church in the Farmyard’. Unless you pay it a visit, keep Howe Wood on your left and you will approach Catmere End using Batts Lane. Walk due east after going through the village and descending the hill, and you will eventually arrive back in Littlebury.

It is not unknown for Littlebury residents to drive to Littlebury Green and park there in order to enjoy the countryside around the hamlets where there are many footpaths and decent walks which children and adults alike will enjoy.

NB There is a footpaths map in the bus shelter at Littlebury.

Littlebury Football Club PDF
Littlebury Football Club was founded in the nineteen seventies by a group of enthusiasts from the village who not only laid out a pitch on the Recreation Ground but also built a set of changing rooms which have since sadly had to be demolished. The club still plays on the same pitch, but now uses the Village Hall as its changing room.

Playing on Sunday mornings the club first joined the Royston League, but soon moved on to the Cambridgeshire League in which it was successful, moving up through the divisions. Later a move was made to the North West Essex League in which it still competes. In the nineties the club was one of the strongest in the district, earning a reputation for high quality, attractive football and winning the Premier Division Championship. Its reputation attracted players from a wide area locally.

More recently the club has been reduced from two teams to one and now competes in Division One, the second tier, of the North West Essex League. It is also now much more of a village club drawing much of its talent from an area close to the village.

The Secretary, Cyril Perrin, is a veteran of village football, being one of the founding members and having served the club as groundsman and committee member for many years. Maintaining a tradition of family involvement, Cyril’s grandson Paul  Bassett is Team Manager, assisted by an enthusiastic committee, including Chairman, Matt Porter.

Secretary, Cyril Perrin, can be contacted on 01799 521957
